Some summer toys pose safety hazards for kids

Some summer toys pose safety hazards for kids

It is anticipated that over the course of this summer, approximately 2.7 million children will be treated in the emergency rooms of hospitals for injuries from accidents. Accordingly, the organization World Against Toys Causing Harm, Inc. is stressing the importance of parents being aware that certain children's products have a high risk of causing kids serious injuries.

At a recent press conference in Boston at Franciscan Children's, advocates for product safety displayed 10 "Summer Safety Traps" that could pose hazards this 4th of July weekend and beyond. Below are some of the worst offenders.

Did talcum powder cause my ovarian cancer?

Did talcum powder cause my ovarian cancer?

In February of this year, a St. Louis jury found that talcum powder contributed to ovarian cancer development in women. Further, they held baby powder manufacturer Johnson & Johnson liable for conspiracy, negligence and failing to warn females not to use talcum powder on or near their genitalia.

The jury was split 10 to two on its verdict, which included $10 million as compensatory damages plus $62 million for punitive damages.

Nationwide recall for jars of fruit sold at Walgreens

Nationwide recall for jars of fruit sold at Walgreens

If you are a fan of sliced peaches or mixed fruit in jars, make sure that you check your cupboards for a recently recalled product.

The Milky Way International Trading Corp. has recalled both its Nice! Mixed Fruit and Nice! Peach Slices that are sold in 8 oz. glass jars. Reportedly, there could be glass shards mixed in with the fruit. This is a voluntary recall based on a single complaint regarding a jar of peaches; no complaints have been received about the company's mixed fruit products.

Bill proposed to create reporting rules for asbestos

Bill proposed to create reporting rules for asbestos

A Democratic senator from another state recently introduced legislation, the Reducing Exposure to Asbestos Database Act, to provide consumers with up-to-date, accessible information on the locations where asbestos is located. The READ Act could lower the risk of exposure to the toxic substance.

The bill would update reporting requirements of the current Asbestos Information Act while requiring those who import, manufacture and handle products that contain asbestos to report information about the products to the federal Environmental Protection Agency every year. The proposed database would register all publicly accessible locations of asbestos-laden products reported the previous year.

Medical device suspected of causing infections

Medical device suspected of causing infections

If you've ever had orthopedic surgery, chances are good that a Bair Hugger was used to keep you warm during the procedure. The blankets with the forced air systems have been used for nearly 30 years in over 200 million surgeries.

In the United States, four out of five medical facilities use these single-use surgical devices, which consist of inflated tubes of hot air that prevent heat loss from the patients' bodies during surgery. They are priced between $6 and $24.

Cough syrup recalled with morphine as ingredient

Cough syrup recalled with morphine as ingredient

Many people turn to alternative medical practices and medications when they are ill or suffering. Some techniques — like acupuncture — have a proven success rate for some patients. Others, such as some types of non-traditional medications, are less beneficial and may even worsen the patient's condition or cause further health woes.

One over-the-counter cough syrup that was sold in Chinese grocery stores in six states falls into the latter group. As announced by the Food and Drug Administration last month, the distributor ordered a voluntary recall of a version of its cough syrups after one of the ingredients was discovered to be morphine.

Product recalls relay on data tracking systems

Product recalls relay on data tracking systems

Have you ever wondered what determines which consumer goods will be pulled from the market in a recall after injuries occur during use of the products?

For the last three decades, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has been using a system to monitor consumers' injuries from products marketed and sold in America. The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System collects statistics on these injuries, which is then combined with data from additional sources to help the CPSC determine what course of action should be taken.

Chipotle chain under criminal investigation

 Chipotle chain under criminal investigation

The embattled Chipotle restaurant chain faces more woes. Recently the company announced it received criminal subpoenas from federal investigators, even as sale profits plunged 30 percent last month after the latest in a series of food contaminations in the restaurants.

In a regulatory filing, the company stated they had to provide documents linked to the norovirus outbreak last summer in its Simi Valley, California, location. Company officials claim this investigation doesn't involve the Boston outbreak of norovirus or the recent E. coli outbreak that spread among the chain.

E-cigs linked to permanent lung disease

E-cigs linked to permanent lung disease

Many manufactures of the popular e-cigarettes tout them as an effective way for smokers to reduce the number of cigarettes they smoke or to kick the habit entirely. However, some recent reports indicate that these smoking alternatives can bring their own share of dangers.

Harvard University scientists released results from research they conducted that revealed a link between e-cigs and the lung disease bronchiolitis obliterans. Commonly referred to as "popcorn lung," it was first diagnosed in a group of Missouri factory workers in 2000.

What are a consumer's rights with defective products?

In 2015, there were many incidents of product recalls, from tainted foods to defective automobiles. Those who suffered injuries due to dangerous consumer products may have legal grounds to file damage claims.

Consumers have a right to be protected from dangerous products on the marketplace. There are three primary kinds of product defects that make up the bulk of product liability claims.

-- Design defects. This could be a bad design for a bike that uses brake cables that are prone to snap when the brakes are applied during normal use.
